On Wednesday, July 31, 2024 Avantpop Bookstore Hosted Author H.L.T. Quan, acclaimed author and political theorist, for an exclusive discussion on Revolutionary Political Thought. H.L.T. Quan's latest work, Become Ungovernable: An Abolition Feminist Ethic for Democratic Living, challenges conventional notions of freedom, justice, and democracy, aiming to liberate these ideals from their exploitation by capital and state interests. Drawing on abolition feminism and inspired by the Black Radical Tradition and queer analytics, Quan proposes a radical ethic of living grounded in inclusion, mutuality, and friendship. Quan was joined by Dr. Erika G. Abad, Associate Professor at Nevada State University's Department of Data, Media, and Design, and Dr. Tyler D. Parry, Director of the African American and African Diaspora Studies Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. H.L.T. Quan is a political theorist, award-winning filmmaker, and Associate Professor of Justice and Social Inquiry in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. Quan is the editor of Cedric J. Robinson: On Racial Capitalism, Black Internationalism, and Cultures of Resistance. Dr. Erika G. Abad has been an Assistant Professor of Communications in Nevada State University’s Department of Data, Media, and Design since the Fall of 2022. Abad’s public scholarship has been published in Couch in the Desert, NYU Latinx Project - Intervenxions, and Double Scoop, among other online outlets. Dr. Tyler D. Parry is Associate Professor and Director of the African American and African Diaspora Studies Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). His research examines slavery in the Americas, cultures within the African diaspora, the legacies of chattel slavery in the 21st century, and the histories of resistance undertaken by oppressed populations. She was the youngest Bureau Chief for Billboard Magazine in Japan at 21; introduced punk rock to the Japanese market through her promotion agency; founded a digital publishing company specializing in travel guides with GPS on CD-ROM pre-internet in Europe; had one of the first travel blogs in 2000; created an AIDS awareness non-profit in South Africa aimed at teenagers, and had her first and only love child in her forties. She runs EK Editorial and Coaching, a business specializing in ghostwriting, book coaching, and editorial services for authors. Elise is working on her second book in her memoir trilogy, A Rogue Entrepreneur - How She Did It Around the World, to be released in 2024.
